CANCER SERVICES AT BAYSHORE COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
Bayshore Community Hospital provides a variety of cancer services to the community including infusion services, diagnostic imaging, laboratory, medical/surgical, therapeutic, nutritional counseling, rehabilitative services and participation in ongoing clinical trials. The hospital also offers support services including free cancer screenings, support groups and community education. Bayshore Community Hospital utilizes a Multidisciplinary Team approach to educate, diagnose and treat cancer patients. This Team, which meets on a regular, ongoing basis, includes representation from the Departments of Surgery, Pathology, Diagnostic Radiology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Nursing, Case Management/Social Service/Quality Improvement, Dietary, Pharmacy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, Community Service, Public Relations, Cancer Registry, Hospital Administration and The Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
Bayshore Community Hospital has a team comprised of physician representatives from the Departments of Surgery, Pathology, Diagnostic Radiology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and other related professionals. This team addresses cancer patient's needs on an individual basis through formulating a specific treatment plan that includes diagnostic testing, work-up, social issues, staging, clinical trials, home care needs and case management when necessary.
The Cancer Committee's primary purpose is to make quality diagnostic and therapeutic approaches available to patients as well as to evaluate the care of these patients. Their ultimate goal is to increase the quality of life for individuals with cancer through patient and staff education, prevention, early diagnosis, pretreatment evaluation, staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation and surveillance intertwined with compassionate care. New diagnostic testing, staging, treatments, quality of care, outcomes, home care issues and clinical trials are addressed.
The objectives of the Cancer Registry are to monitor and report all reportable types of cancer diagnosed and/or treated at Bayshore Community Hospital; to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment; to follow-up with patients; to monitor continued medical supervision and quality of life in order to generate reports in studies, planning of cancer programs and administrative planning for institutional resources. The Cancer Registry complies with the State of New Jersey Department of Health Cancer Reporting Law and abides by the guidelines set forth by the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and the American College of Surgeons.
All multidisciplinary diagnostic services are offered to help diagnose, stage and treat cancer. The following services are offered to patients and services not provided at Bayshore Community Hospital, are referred to other outside facilities.
Medical Oncology services are offered in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Medical Oncologists offer services in their private offices, which include chemotherapy administration, psychosocial support and nursing services.
The Surgical Oncology program consists of four major Operating Rooms, Endoscopy Suites and Cystoscopy Suite. All surgical disciplines including breast, colon, stomach, urology, thoracic, neurosurgery and orthopedics play a highly active role in the surgical treatment of cancer.
Radiation Oncology services are offered at neighboring hospitals. Bayshore Community Hospital offers Radioactive Prostate Seed Implantation, which includes Iodine 125, Palladium (PD 103) seeds. Strontinum and Quadrament injections are used here to reduce bone pain related to metastatic cancer.
The Pathology Department provides diagnostic services for all blood, biopsies, surgical specimens and cytologies. Reference laboratories are utilized when indicated.
Diagnostic Radiology performs a variety of imaging techniques that detect and treat cancer. The Mammography Center affiliate of Bayshore Community Hospital is FDA and ACR (American College of Radiology) accredited and promotes Breast Cancer Awareness. Digital and Breast MRI, Pet Scan, Mammography, Stereotactic Ultrasound and Sentinel Node biopsies are performed as needed. Nuclear Medicine performs many imaging techniques that detect and treat cancer. Participation in American Cancer Society Life Link Study, the CINJ STAR trials and other ongoing research trials and programs.
