We offer a wide array of programs designed to care for people throughout their cancer experience including risk assessment, second opinion services, early detection, pain management, home health care, and hospice services. We offer over nine different support groups, education services, and community cancer screenings to round out our comprehensive approach.
Access to Clinical Trials
Our affiliation with The Cancer Institute of New Jersey allows us to offer access to the latest research studies. As an academic institution, we also participate in cooperative group studies through the Gynecologic Oncology Group, the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, and the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, as well as through institutional partners and pharmaceutical companies.
We are continually evaluating the most effective diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. Our Radiation Oncology Program has implemented radioactive seed implants. Progressive surgical approaches, including minimally invasive surgeries, and Positron Emission Tomography (PET scanning) are further examples of our use of advanced technologies for diagnosing and treating cancers. And in 2005, as a partner of Meridian Health, we will have access to CyberKnife®, as one of only 16 facilities in the nation to offer this technology. CyberKnife is a revolutionary radiosurgical device that uses a combination of robotics and sophisticated image-guidance technology to deliver precisely targeted doses of radiation to tumors - even tumors that are beyond the reach of other radiosurgery systems.
Our highly credentialed medical staff are leaders in their fields and have trained at premier cancer institutions throughout the country, such as the University of Pennsylvania and Sloan-Kettering. Their variety of specialties includes thoracic oncology, gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary cancers, gynecologic cancers, and neurologic tumors. Our team is comprised of oncology-certified nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, and social workers that strive to meet the total needs of patients and their family members.
Children's Cancer Program
Our Pediatric Oncology Ambulatory Program features a team of specialists that includes a board-certified pediatric hematologist/oncologist, pediatric nurses with an expertise in chemotherapy, and a dedicated support staff. These professionals provide comprehensive care for children with cancer and other blood disorders in an environment that is sensitive to the needs of children and their parents.
The program provides counseling, education, emotional and psychosocial support, and referral services. As a member of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and an affiliate of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Division at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, our collaborative approach between physicians and scientists makes it possible to provide the most advanced cancer care for children, close to home.
The Pain Institute at Jersey Shore University Medical Center is a comprehensive pain management center that evaluates and treats all types of pain. The Institute is directed by an attending anesthesiologist who has additional fellowship training in pain management and is board certified in both anesthesiology and pain medicine. During an initial visit, a pain treatment specialist conducts a complete medical evaluation of a patient’s pain, and then designs a targeted treatment plan. Treatment is closely monitored and changes are made when necessary. In addition, routine reports are provided to the patient’s referring and/or family physician.
Breast Care Center
At Jersey Shore Breast Care Center, we are committed to meeting the breast health care needs of all women. Our nurse talks with each patient about the three components of a good breast health plan: mammography, clinical breast exams, and breast self-exams. She also shows patients how to perform breast self-exams with confidence.
