JFK Medical Center in Edison is committed to providing quality care for individuals with cancer. The Center offers all the services needed to effectively treat cancer, including surgery, medical oncology, radiation therapy, nursing care, support and counseling services, nutritional assistance and outpatient treatment options. The Center has been designated by the Commission on Cancer as a Comprehensive Community Center.  Only one in four hospitals in the nation can boast this special accreditation.

A Team of Experts
Our patients are treated by a team of highly skilled health care specialists. This comprehensive and multi-disciplinary team includes: experienced, skilled physicians from all specialties, such as medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, neuro oncology, internal medicine, family practice and radiology; a surgical staff including board certified surgeons who are specialists in reconstructive, gynecologic, urologic and neurologic surgery; nurses specially trained in cancer treatment and certified to administer chemotherapy. Many of our nurses also hold a special certification in oncology patient care by the Oncology Nursing Society; counselors, who address a full range of psychosocial needs from diagnosis through bereavement; clergy to support all faiths; physical, occupational, speech and nutritional therapists.

Cutting-Edge Therapy
Radiation Oncology services offers our patients cutting-edge technology.  The center is equipped with a state of the art linear accelerator, which emits a beam of radiation into the tumor, destroying the cancer cells.  Our team is able to treat the tumor with pinpoint accuracy while minimizing side effects using Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT). 

IGRT technology accounts for motion to ensure that the target is in the same position every treatment session. With IGRT, innovative radiographic, fluoroscopic and cone-beam CT modes enables clinicians to verify that treatments are given in the same position every day. 

IGRT provides high-resolution, three-dimensional images to pinpoint tumor sites, adjust patient positioning when necessary, and complete a treatment—all within the standard treatment time slot. These capabilities take IMRT one step further by raising the quality of patient care and improving efficiency.

IMRT "paints" the radiation dose onto the tumor with pinpoint precision. This technique is used on certain cancers to spare healthy surrounding tissue.  IMRT has proven to be a remarkably effective way to treat cancer and improve patients’ lives during treatment and beyond.

JFK Medical Center Cancer Services in conjunction with the Neuroscience Institute was the first hospital in New Jersey to offer the advancements of the Gamma Knife, a stereotactic radiosurgery technique that can eradicate tumors deep within the brain without a single incision.  This innovative technology, created and used exclusively for the treatment of brain tumors and vascular malformations, offers multiple benefits compared to conventional brain surgery.  These benefits include reduced risk of complications, shorter hospitalization and virtually painless treatment. 

Comprehensive Breast Center
The JFK Breast Center combines the most advanced technology for detection of breast disease with an understanding and compassionate approach to treatment. Accredited by the American College of Radiology, this facility is staffed by female technologists certified in mammography and board-certified radiologists. The center provides comprehensive screening services, all digital mammography, ultrasound and stereotactic and sonographic breast biopsy to detect and diagnose breast cancer. The center also has the capacity to perform MRI breast biopsy. Our Mammography machines are connected to an R2 Image Checker as does the Digital Mammography Machine has CAD capacity. These computer aided detection systems are leading-edge tools designed to assist radiologists in the early detection of breast cancer by identifying and marking areas that may warrant closer inspection by the radiologist.

Dedicated Inpatient Unit
The JFK Auxiliary Oncology Pavilion, located on the third floor of JFK Medical Center was recently renovated to better serve the changing needs of cancer patients and their families. It consists of 15 beds, nine of which are private suites specially equipped for medical isolation cases. The unit features a four chair outpatient transfusion suite.  For the comfort of our patients and their families, the unit has a spacious Family Lounge which provides comfortable seating, a computer with internet service and a television, along with refreshments.

Outpatient Infusion Unit
On the second floor of JFK Medical Center is a ten chair Outpatient Infusion Unit.  The Unit is an innovative, state-of-the-art facility where you can receive intravenous infusions and therapeutic injections in a safe, professional and comfortable environment.  Infusion Unit is open seven days a week, from 8a to 5pm.

Support Groups and Counseling
In addition to treating the medical side of cancer, our team consists of counselors who work with patients and their families on the emotional aspects of dealing with cancer. A wide variety of support groups are offered to help patients and their families cope with important cancer-related issues.

Haven Hospice
Haven Hospice is one of Central New Jersey’s most comprehensive programs dedicated to helping individuals cope with terminal illness. The program offers a vast spectrum of services that meet the medical, emotional, and psychological and spiritual needs of patients and families during life's most difficult challenge. Services are provided in the patient’s own home at area long-term care facilities or in The Mary Anne Hale Pavilion located at JFK Medical Center, a beautiful in-patient care facility providing a home-like environment.
