Early Detection and Screening for Cancer

How do I find out about early detection and screening programs?

  • Ask your healthcare provider what screening tests are recommended for your age and gender.
  • Visit the American Cancer Society website at www.cancer.org or call at 1-800-221-2141.
  • If you do not have insurance, and are age 40 years or older, call your local New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection Program at 609-292-8542.
  • If you are 65 years or older and receive Medicare, screening tests performed at a Medicare-approved facility are covered every year.
  • Call your local hospital and health department for information specific to your community.
  • Visit the National Cancer Institute's website at www.cancer.gov for information regarding specific cancers.

By law in New Jersey, the cost of screening tests must be covered by private health insurance/health maintenance organizations or by the New Jersey Cancer Education Early Detection (NJCEED).
