CINJ Guidance on Acknowledgment Statements

CINJ members may wish to include, along with other acknowledgements (e.g. Institution, School, Dept., etc.), an acknowledgement of CINJ support and/or CINJ membership in your publications, abstract submissions (ASCO, AACR, etc.), poster and slide presentations, press releases and any other outlet you would deem appropriate.  The following are example acknowledgements:

Membership Affiliation

Example: “Member, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey”

Funding Support

Any publication resulting from research supported by CINJ should appropriately acknowledge CINJ and the source of funds (such as the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant P30CA072720 or the DOD Dean and Betty Gallo Prostate Cancer Center Award #).

Example (for NIH-NCI CCSG fund support):

“The research was supported by The Cancer Institute of New Jersey through Grant Number P30CA072720 from the National Cancer Institute. The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the National Cancer Institute or the National Institutes of Health.”

Example (for DOD Dean and Betty Gallo Prostate Cancer Center fund support):

"This research was supported by The Cancer Institute of New Jersey through Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program under award number Wxxxxxxxxxxxx. Views and opinions of, and endorsements by the author(s) do not reflect those of the US Army or the Department of Defense."

Shared Resource Support

Example:

“This research was supported by the {list the name(s) of the appropriate shared resources} Shared Resources of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey.”

Please also consider including the names of individuals from the shared resources if they provided any intellectual input or additional effort.

NIH Sharing Policies and Related Guidance on NIH-Funded Research Resources

http://grants.nih.gov/grants/sharing.htm

It is NIH policy that the results and accomplishments of the activities that it funds should be made available to the public.  PIs and funding recipient institutions are expected to make the results and accomplishments of their activities available to the research community and to the public at large.  Go to this website for a list of links to selected NIH policies and related guidance on sharing of research resources developed with NIH funding. Public Access Policy

http://publicaccess.nih.gov

Effective April 7, 2008. Under a new federal law, NIH is now requiring that the author's final version of any peer-reviewed journal article resulting from NIH activities must be submitted to the PubMed Central (PMC) repository, where it will be made available to the public within 12 months after the journal article is published.

As of May 25, 2008, NIH applications, proposals and progress reports must include the PubMed Central reference number (PMCID) when citing an article that falls under the policy and is authored or co-authored by the investigator, or arose from the investigator’s NIH award. This policy includes applications, proposals and progress reports submitted to the NIH for the May 25, 2008 due date and subsequent due dates.

A. Publication. The recipient is encouraged to publish results of the research, unless classified, in appropriate journals. One copy of each paper planned for publication shall be submitted to the technical representative simultaneously with its submission for publication. Copies of all publications resulting from the research shall be forwarded to the Grants Officer as they become available, even though publication may in fact occur subsequent to the termination date of this award.

B. Acknowledgment. The recipient agrees that in the release of information relating to this award such release shall include statements to the effect that the project or effort depicted was sponsored by the Department of the Army and shall include:

  • The Award Number;
  • "The U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity, 820 Chandler Street, Fort Detrick MD 21702-5014 is the awarding and administering acquisition office." and;
  • A statement that the content of the information does not necessarily reflect the position or the policy of the Government, and no official endorsement should be inferred. For purposes of this article, information includes news releases, articles, manuscripts, brochures, advertisements, still and motion pictures, speeches, trade association proceedings, etc.

C. Prior to release to the public, the recipient shall notify the Grants Officer and the Grants Officer's Representative (GOR) of the following: planned news releases, planned publicity, advertising material concerning grant/cooperative agreement work, and planned presentations to scientific meetings. This provision is not intended to restrict dissemination of research information; the purpose is to inform the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) of planned public release of information on USAMRMC funded research, in order to adequately respond to inquiries and to be alert to the possibility of inadvertent release of information which could be taken out of context.

D. If the research involves the use of laboratory animals, the recipient must include the following statement in any publication resulting from the research: "Research was conducted in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act Regulations and other Federal statutes relating to animals and experiments involving animals and adheres to the principles set forth in the Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, National Research Council, 1996."

EXAMPLE ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Acknowledge the DOD program in manuscripts, book chapters, abstracts, posters, and oral presentations when the work is supported in part or in whole, by the DOD programs using statements such as:
