I am a Board Certified Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist and have been at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey since May 2014. Before I joined the Cancer Institute, I worked at New York Medical College-Westchester Medical Center for more than 25 years; and worked for several years (2010- 2014) in India, establishing and developing a pediatric cancer center.
I completed my medical education at Madurai Medical College in Madurai, India and did my residency in Pediatrics at New York Medical College and fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at Long Island Jewish Hillside Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York.
I enjoy taking care of children with any type of pediatric cancer or blood disorder; and in caring for the children, I aim to follow the principles embodied in Francis Peabody’s statement:
“Time, sympathy and understanding must be lavishly dispensed, but the reward is to be found in that personal bond which forms the greatest satisfaction of the practice of medicine. One of the essential qualities of the clinician is interest in humanity, for the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient.”
With the assistance from the multidisciplinary team in our Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Program at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jerey, I help educate patients and their families on treatment options so that they can make informed decisions.
I am also very much interested in developing clinical collaborations with the basic scientists and molecular biologists at the Cancer Institute to support translational research. By having the resources available that can only be found at a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center like ours, our team is able to translate these research findings and directly apply them to patient therapies.
I also have a keen interest in contributing to the development of pediatric cancer centers in developing countries, by working with the physicians on site - because 85% of world’s children with cancer live in developing countries; and only 40% of them have access to modern cancer treatment.
Sickle cell disease, immune thrombocytopenic pupura (ITP), thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), acute lymphoblastic leukemia and Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
