The Center for Cancer Survivorship
Today there are more than 12 million cancer survivors in the United States. In New Jersey there are an estimated 334,000 cancer survivors. Cancer survivorship is the experience of living with, through and beyond the diagnosis of cancer. The Cancer Institute of New Jersey’s Center for Cancer Survivorship provides a focal point through which all survivor care and research is coordinated.
The Center for Cancer Survivorship’s mission is to provide state-of-the-art care tailored to the unique needs of survivors, develop new knowledge around survivorship issues, and partner with communities to continue an ongoing learning dialogue with patients, family members and health care professionals to enhance the quality of life of cancer survivors.
Clinical programs of the Center for Cancer Survivorship:
The Valerie Fund/CINJ LITE Program
The The Valerie Fund/CINJ LITE Program provides long-term evaluation, support, and health education for the growing population of childhood cancer survivors. The successes in the treatment of childhood cancer have led to increasing survival rates.
The Bridge Program
The Bridge Program provides long-term evaluation, support, and health education for adult cancer survivors.
Survivors' Action League
Many patients, their friends and family members have expressed the desire to help in the fight against cancer. This includes advocacy, assisting other patients, sharing their experience with clinical trials, public speaking, etc., but they are uncertain about how to direct their efforts. The Center for Cancer Survivorship is asking all survivors, their caregivers and friends, who want to become involved to register with the CINJ Survivors' Action League. Based on the interest and energy of this group, the Center will focus its collective efforts to make an impact on survivorship issues. Sign up for CINJ's Survivors' Action League to receive notifications about upcoming events and activities. For additional information about this program contact, Denalee O'Malley, MSW Program Manager at 732-235-7915.
Study Examines Needs of Cancer Survivors When They No Longer Require Specialized Care
A research study sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, CINJ and the U.S. Department of Defense will look at how breast and prostate cancer survivors view their medical needs as they no longer need to be under the care of an oncologist and go back to their regular family doctor, internist or gynecologist for follow-up care.
