Physician Profile

Thomas Kearney, MD, FACS
Associate Chief of Surgical Oncology
Section Chief, Breast Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology
Director of Breast Care Services
Surgical Oncologist

As a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist at the Stacy Goldstein Breast Cancer Center at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, I guide patients in choosing appropriate surgical options for breast cancer treatment.  As part of the multi-disciplinary team, I work closely with my colleagues in medical oncology, radiation oncology and reconstructive surgery (when needed) to help patients select appropriate additional therapies. I am also available to help patients evaluate breast concerns such as lumps and abnormal mammograms.

The field of breast cancer surgery has changed dramatically since my days as a surgical resident at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and as a surgical oncology fellow at the University of Chicago. Since coming to the Cancer Institute in 1995, I have seen the field of breast surgical oncology make tremendous advances in providing precise, personalized options to patients.

Radical surgery is much less common today. Most patients can avoid mastectomy safely. For those patients for whom mastectomy is the only safe choice, a number of advances in breast reconstruction, including nipple sparing mastectomy surgery, have allowed patients to more fully recover from their surgery with their body image intact. Frequently, breast biopsies can be performed without invasive surgery, a major step forward in patient comfort and convenience.

I am the author or co-author of more than two dozen scientific papers and over 120 scientific presentations. I have had extensive experience with surgical oncology education as well as clinical trials research. I am proud to serve as the director of the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital NAPBC accredited Breast Program.

Clinical Expertise
