Resources for Junior Faculty

Rutgers Cancer Institute is committed to providing state-of-the-art career enhancement opportunities for our faculty. There are many programs available for junior faculty to strengthen both their research and professional “soft” skills.

Training in Responsible Conduct of Research

All faculty and trainees are required to complete a course in Responsible Conduct of Research. Designed following NIH requirements as to frequency, content, duration, and participation by faculty (including Rutgers Cancer Institute faculty), the course is managed by the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Faculty and staff conducting clinical research are also required to complete Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) training provided by Rutgers Office of Research Regulatory Affairs. The Rutgers Cancer Institute Office of Human Research Services maintains records of completion of CITI training for all Rutgers Cancer Institute faculty and staff and provides reminders for regular refresher training. Similar courses are required by our Princeton consortium institution.

Taught by faculty at Rutgers Cancer Institute, the goals of this 13-lecture introductory course are to:

  • Provide a basic understanding of concepts, research methodologies, biostatistical tools, and ethical and regulatory procedures in patient-oriented research
  • Train scholars to interpret the results of clinical investigations
  • Utilize the knowledge gained for research and patient care

Topics covered in the course include:Rutgers Cancer Institute researcher putting vial into processing machine

  • Hypothesis-based research
  • Clinical research design
  • Epidemiology
  • Clinical trials
  • Statistical methods
  • Ethical issues in clinical investigation

This course is offered to postgraduate trainees at the Rutgers Cancer Institute, postdoctoral fellows in our translational research training program, and junior faculty. Participants also include Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School faculty as part of their formal mentoring program.

Grant Writing Seminars

The university sponsors full-day as well as multi-session grant writing programs provided by highly-rated external consulting firms. For example, over the last two years, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) sponsored a full-day Grant Writers Workshop titled "Write Winning Grant Proposals," which was attended by newly-recruited faculty from the Rutgers Cancer Institute. Additional training for early/mid-career faculty is available through the New Jersey Alliance for Clinical and Translational Science

Objective Analysis of Self and Institution Seminars (OASIS)

The OASIS Leadership and Professional Development program is designed to promote inclusive community, combat isolation, and mitigate against bias that can negatively shape the experiences of women faculty who may often face unique needs and challenges as they navigate higher ranks and leadership in academia.

Rutgers Program for Early Career Excellence (PECE)

The Program for Early Career Excellence (PECE) workshop series supports Rutgers’ mission to recruit, retain, and advance a diverse faculty through a slate of regular engagement opportunities to connect with others and support early career success.
