    This workshop is a community appropriate lesson on how cancer develops, the basics of screening and how you can be empowered to reduce your risks for certain cancers.

    Clinical trials are a vital part of the healthcare process from screening practices through to treatment. This workshop aims to demystify the research process and to help understand the ethics, pros and cons of participating in a clinical trial.
  • Research Studies, Ethics and Shared Decision Making
    The ethics of research is a continually evolving process, these protections are put into place to ensure research participant safety. Shared decision making is a patient-centered approach that offers a wide variety of benefits to community members. This workshop reviews ethics, protections and the process of shared decision making empowering community members to make decision about their healthcare.

    Clinical trials can occur any time through the cancer trajectory, this workshop provides a basic overview of the cancer trajectory with an emphasis on the research protocol, ethics and protections in place to ensure the safety of trial participants.

Research Corner

  • Women’s Circle of Health Study
    The Women’s Circle of Health Study is an inclusive breast cancer study that evaluates the causes of an early age and more aggressive breast cancer in black women. The study is a collaborative effort between Rutgers Cancer Institute, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, the New Jersey State Cancer Registry, and Rutgers School of Public Health. Participants are recruited in 10 counties throughout NJ. In 2014, with additional funding from NCI, the study was enhanced and redesigned as a cohort study of Black breast cancer survivors. This follow-up study evaluates the impact of obesity and related comorbidities, or other chronic disease conditions, which are seen in high amounts in this population, it also looks at quality of life, patient-reported outcomes, and survival.
