Telemedicine

Telemedicine or telehealth refers to the practice of caring for patients remotely when the provider and patient are not physically present with each other. Modern technology now allows doctors to seamlessly meet with patients by using stable, secure, and interactive video-conferencing platforms.

Rutgers Cancer Institute physicians and advanced practice providers (e.g., nurse practitioners) are now available for telemedicine appointments for existing patients as well as new patients/consults with cancer providers of all subtypes and specialties (e.g., medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, and radiation oncologists). Second opinion consults are also available in collaboration with physicians across the RWJBarnabas Health Oncology Service Line.

A telemedicine appointment is similar to an in-person visit in that the oncology provider will review the patient’s medical record and status with the patient and will take notes just like they would during an in-person visit. They will address any concerns and reassure the patient about their treatment plan during the exchange.

Telemedicine is an effective and convenient way for patients to connect with our outstanding and expert oncology team from the convenience of his or her own home. We are also able to conference in a patient’s caregiver who may be in another location, as well as an interpreter so they can be part of the consultation. No special equipment is necessary to participate in a telemedicine visit. It can be done using a computer, tablet, and/or smart phone via an appropriate HIPAA compliant video-conferencing platform. Our practice management staff provides detailed information regarding the process when the appointment is scheduled.
