- Changes in function of drug transporters in the kidneys alter susceptibility of patients to adverse events such as cisplatin-induced renal injury. Overexpression of the efflux transporter multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 (MRP2) has been associated with resistance to cisplatin cytotoxicity in a number of cancer cell lines. MRP2 is also expressed in rodent and human kidneys. Our hypothesis is that MRP2 is responsible for the renal excretion of cisplatin and that loss of MRP2 function increases susceptibility of the kidney to toxicity.
