Joseph R. Bertino Memorial Lecture Series

Guest Speaker: Carlos Cordon-Cardo, MD, PhD, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

Dr. Carlos Cordon-Cardo earned his medical degree from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and his PhD in Cell Biology and Genetics from Cornell University. He is Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology, Molecular and Cell-Based Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. He previously held senior academic positions at Columbia University and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he founded and served as the first Director of the Division of Molecular Pathology. A pioneer in molecular oncologic pathology and systems pathology, Dr. Cordon-Cardo has made major contributions to understanding the molecular mechanisms of cancer, identifying therapeutic targets, and advancing precision medicine. His work has also helped establish integrated approaches combining molecular pathology, digital pathology, computational modeling, and artificial intelligence to improve cancer diagnosis, prognostication, and therapeutic decision-making. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led the development of comprehensive molecular and serologic diagnostic platforms for SARS-CoV-2.

He has maintained continuous NIH funding for approximately three decades and has served as principal investigator on numerous NCI-supported research programs. His scientific work has received more than 137,000 citations, with an h-index of 181 according to Google Scholar. ScholarGPS Highly Ranked Scholars™ recently placed him among the top 0.05% of researchers worldwide by scientific impact. Throughout his career, he has trained and mentored more than 100 biomedical investigators, many of whom now hold leadership positions in academic medicine and research. Among his major honors are election to the National Academy of Inventors, membership in Academia Europaea, Fellowship of the Royal Society of Medicine, the Gold Medal of the Swedish Society of Medicine, the Distinguished Alumnus Award of Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences, the Jacobi Medallion of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Barcelona.
