The Program for Advanced Head and Neck Surgery at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey provides state-of-the-art, comprehensive care for patients in need of diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the ear, nose, throat and neck as well as sleep disorders. Head and neck cancer encompasses a wide range of tumors that can develop in several areas of the head and neck, including the throat, larynx (voice box), nose, sinuses, and mouth.
The team of highly specialized experts of neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons, radiation oncologists, nurses, and rehabilitation specialists review each case in a multidisciplinary approach and use the latest technologies including minimally invasive robotic surgery, gamma knife, hypoglossal nerve stimulation, and proton therapy.
The program’s leader, Kianoush Sheykholeslami, MD, PhD, FACS, is triple board certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Sleep Medicine. As a robotic console surgeon, he is able to resect head and neck cancers through the mouth using minimally invasive robotic surgery, preserving the speech and swallowing function of the throat. Dr. Sheykholeslami is a specialist in treating patients with head and neck masses and cancer via minimally invasive or noninvasive treatments, offering care to patients suffering from chronic debilitating problems related to hearing and balance function, chronic ear and mastoid diseases, and cancer of the nose, eyelid, mouth and throat.
Patients of the Program for Advanced Head and Neck Surgery receive a personalized, approach to care and are evaluated for multimodality treatments including participation in clinical trials. Physicians are actively involved in developing these innovative approaches and also participate in national collaborative group clinical trials. Scientists and physicians work closely together to continually improve the ways in which we diagnose and treat head and neck tumors.
