MR-Linac (Magnetic Resonance Linear Accelerator)

Rutgers Cancer Institute and RWJBarnabas Health are home to two of New Jersey's three MR-Linac systems, located at the Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center in New Brunswick and the Melchiorre Cancer Center in Livingston. These centers are among a select group worldwide offering this innovative technology.

What is the MR-Linac?

The MR-Linac combines high-resolution MRI imaging with precise radiation therapy in a single system. By providing continuous, real-time images of the tumor and surrounding healthy tissue during treatment, the MR-Linac enables your care team to personalize and adapt your treatment plan as the tumor changes in size, shape, or position. This improves treatment precision while helping to protect healthy tissue.

This adaptive capability helps deliver radiation with exceptional accuracy, potentially reducing side effects, minimizing unnecessary radiation exposure to healthy organs, and, for some patients, shortening the overall course of treatment.
