Kinney Research Program Current Studies

Project HERO Logo

The purpose of the research is to: determine whether usual care, or a body training program, or a body-mind training program may help improve health and well-being in 166 senior men with a diagnosis of cancer.

Participants enrolled in this study will be asked to complete a baseline evaluation, be randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups, and complete follow up assessments. The evaluation consists of questions regarding health and well being and thoughts, as well as completing a health assessment and biospecimen collections. The 3 groups participants could be assigned to a Body Training, a Body Mind Training or a Usual Care group. Both Training classes will be led by trained professionals and can be joined either online or in person. The follow up assessments will also contain a survey, health assessments and biospecimen collections.

Eligibility:
Male
55 and older

This study addresses the challenge facing many people at increased hereditary cancer risk: barriers to genetic testing and family health decision making.

Focus group discussions will take place virtually with individuals (male and female) who have ever been diagnosed with cancer, a cancer-related gene mutation or spouses/partners or first degree relative of someone diagnosed with cancer or a cancer-related gene mutation. The results of this study will help us to develop a web-based cancer genetic family communication intervention that will assist patients and their families to make health decisions. Participants will be compensated for their time.

Eligibility:
Diagnosed with cancer or a cancer-related gene mutation
Spouse/partner or first degree relative of someone diagnosed with cancer or a cancer-related gene mutation
Age 19 +
Able to speak and read English
Reliable internet or phone access to join focus group discussion

GRACE Logo

The goal of this research study is to find better strategies to prevent and control cancer in women and their families.

GRACE is a randomized 3-arm trial to determine the comparative effectiveness of two remote cancer communication interventions: 1) a targeted generic print (TP), or 2) a tailored telephone-based counseling and navigation intervention (TCN). While enrolled in the study, participants are asked to complete a baseline, 1 month, 6 month and 12 month survey. These survey’s will ask questions about several different items, including health, thoughts, and feelings toward genetic risk assessment. Participants may also be asked to speak with a cancer education specialist.

Eligibility:
Women
Age 21 and older
Previous history of breast or ovarian cancer

This research study aims to update current ways to treat nausea during chemotherapy treatment.

Participants enrolled in this research study will be asked to complete 4 surveys at baseline, first infusion, 24 hours post infusion and 5 day post infusion. The questions asked will be about their background and their personal feelings. Participants will also be asked to provide a saliva and a stool sample.

Eligibility:
Men and women 18 years and older

The purpose of the research is to develop an educational website to empower Black and African American cancer patients to make informed decisions about personalized cancer treatment and clinical trials. The website offers tools for discussing innovative treatments with their clinicians, finding clinical trials, and locating support groups.

Eligibility:
Participants are eligible if they have a recently diagnosed cancer, stage I-IV solid tumor, self-identify as Black or African American, and is 18 years and older.

TELESCOPE Logo

The purpose of the research is to reduce the burden of lung cancer among people with a history of heavy smoking, particularly for underserved populations, by supporting high-quality decision making about lung cancer screening and tobacco control. In addition, we aim to identify an effective Shared Decision-Making intervention that can readily be implemented in real-world primary care settings serving ethnically or racially and socioeconomically diverse patients.

Participants enrolled in this study will be asked to complete a baseline survey, be randomly assigned to 1 of 2 clinics and complete a follow-up survey. The surveys consists of questions regarding your general health, thoughts, feelings or attitudes toward cancer screening.

Eligibility:
50-77 years of age
Current or past smoking history within the last 15 years

CATALYST Logo

The purpose of CATALYST is to develop and pilot test a streamlined care delivery model for genetic education and testing for hereditary cancer. This intervention provides proactive outreach and physician recommendation; access and streamlined genetic education via an artificial intelligence-based chatbot; and facilitated access to germline genetic testing in persons who have been diagnosed with breast, ovarian, colorectal, endometrial, pancreatic and/or prostate cancer. Through this innovative health care delivery model, we can positively impact outcomes in patients and their family members while conserving the scarce resources of genetic specialty settings.
