Rutgers Cancer Institute is an independent institute of Rutgers University and a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, operating as a consortium cancer center between Rutgers University and Princeton University, as identified by the NCI.

Within the Rutgers Cancer Institute are a variety of departments, divisions, programs and centers; in addition, there are Centers of Excellence within the cancer center that are accountable to higher expectations of performance and productivity and demonstrate that they are leaders in their area of designation. The definition of a Rutgers Cancer Institute Center of Excellence is a collaborative team that provides leadership, best practices, research, support, training, information dissemination and/or community services for a focus area, with the ability to attract new, talented and diverse faculty.

Rutgers Cancer Institute Centers of Excellence demonstrate a strong performance record and advance the strategic goals of the institution. With the breadth and depth of activities to become transformative in the area of designation, they have the potential to be national leaders. Centers of Excellence are designated by the Cancer Center Director, and each is reviewed biannually (every other year) by the Rutgers Cancer Institute Officers Cabinet.
