AYA Cancer Survivor and Parent Communication and Transition Readiness
The goal of this study is to examine how perceptions of communication between adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors and parents that occurs generally and in medical contexts influences AYA s readiness to transition to managing their own health care. The protocol includes two phases. First, we will have four focus groups that serve as co-design meetings in which subjects will take and give feedback on one of two surveys (survivor version or parent version). After surveys have been modified, 50 dyads who are presenting at the LITE center for a medical visit will be recruited to complete surveys. Surveys will ask about communication behaviors.
Objectives
Our primary aim is to examine how dyads general communication climate and communication that enacts resilience about self-care influence perceptions of relational uncertainty, partner interference, partner facilitation, relational turbulence, and transition readiness. Our secondary aim is to determine how communication between AYA survivors and parents in healthcare settings influences AYA survivor transition readiness.
