Rutgers Cancer Institute and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School offer a two-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited Fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology. This program is for board eligible general surgeons (or the equivalent training in Canada or Great Britain), who wish to attain subspecialty certification for the practice of general surgical oncology.
Program Details
The program is comprised of 24 one-month rotations which include four months of gastrointestinal surgical oncology, four months of melanoma/soft tissue surgical oncology, two months of breast surgical oncology, one-month rotations in head and neck surgery, pathology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology, four months of research time, four months of elective time (that may be spent in clinical rotations or research), and two months of vacation time. Fellows may request a third year of training devoted to research.
Clinical experience is especially strong in the “core” surgical oncology rotations, including gastrointestinal surgical oncology, melanoma/soft tissue surgical oncology, and breast surgical oncology. Research opportunities, in addition to required didactic training in clinical research methods and regulatory issues, include options for bench research, epidemiologic/public health research, and clinical trials research, with an emphasis on translational research.
The overall objectives of the Fellowship Program include:
- Train surgical oncologists to become leaders in clinical care, research, and program administration.
- Teach surgical oncologists the broad fund of knowledge and organizational skills necessary to be an effective participant and leader of multidisciplinary cancer care teams.
- Train surgical oncologists to diagnose, stage, treat, and follow patients with cancer or suspected cancer along with a multidisciplinary care team.
- Instruct surgical oncologists in the basics of tumor biology and the biology of cancer therapies (including surgery, chemotherapy, “targeted” therapies, immunotherapy, and radiation therapy).
- Teach surgical oncologists the necessary skills to participate in research directed at the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and care of cancer.
- Prepare surgical oncologists to independently embark upon the practice of complex surgical oncology in community and academic settings.

Expectations
Fellows in the program will be expected to develop progressive independence in the practice of complex surgical oncology by participating in ambulatory evaluation and care, working in a busy academic hospital with responsibility for pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative care, and attending and leading multidisciplinary tumor conferences. They will be expected to learn the basics of research design, administration, and implementation through didactic courses and individualized research experiences that may include basic, clinical, translational, and epidemiologic investigations. Fellows will be given responsibilities for leading conferences, making presentations, and teaching junior residents to develop the Fellows’ leadership and teaching skills.
Upon graduation, it is expected that Fellows will be ready to embark upon the practice of Complex General Surgical Oncology in an academic or community-based environment as an active participant and leader.
Eligibility
All applicants must have completed their residency training in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) general surgery program in the United States or Canada and be able to secure a New Jersey medical license.
At the time of entry into the fellowship program all applicants will be Board eligible or board-certified general surgeons under the auspices of the American Board of Surgery.

The application deadline is typically the 3rd Monday in January (11:59pm EST). Please refer to the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) website for instructions on how to apply to our program. We require a current CV, ABSITE scores, personal statement, and three letters of recommendation. We also participate in the national match program through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP).
