The Big Impact of Small Gestures

Behind Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey’s internationally recognized clinicians and researchers working to make progress in the fight against cancer is an army of dedicated volunteers, each making unique and important contributions to support cancer patients.Samantha Rozario One such volunteer is Rutgers University undergraduate student, Samantha Rozario, who wanted to find a way to give back to her community while attending school. She shares more about her experience providing support to patients undergoing cancer treatment and their families.

What are some of the volunteer activities you participate in?

As a Patient and Family Support volunteer, my primary role is to provide comfort and support to patients and families. I assist with the Comfort Cart and deliver items that were donated by community organizations (lotion, lip balm, socks, etc.) to patients. I also raise awareness about the patient library (Resource Learning Center) by handing out free resources that address nutrition, exercise, and wellness for cancer patients.

Can you tell us of any times in particular where you feel you’ve had a special impact?

Treatment and clinic visits can be stressful, especially for new patients. Visiting patients with the Comfort Cart is a way to let patients and families know that members of Rutgers Cancer Institute and community organizations are there to support them. I hope that my service as a volunteer brings a sense of comfort to all patients – it is truly a rewarding experience. Anyone can make a small, but lasting impact by showing kindness, compassion, and support.

In the first four months of the program, 39 dedicated volunteers joined Rutgers Cancer Institute’s volunteer program and a total of 375 hours of service were given. Learn more about the program and how to apply: https://www.cinj.org/patient-care/volunteering-rutgers-cancer-institute
