New Brunswick, N.J.– The Director of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), Robert S. DiPaola, MD, who is the associate dean for oncology programs at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, has been named by the weekly business journal NJBIZ as one of the “50 Most Powerful People in Health Care in New Jersey.” NJBIZ, whose focus is New Jersey, identifies itself as the only weekly business journal of its kind in the state. CINJ is Center of Excellence of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and New Jersey’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, considered a statewide resource of extraordinary quality for the Garden State residents.
Looking to identify the next generation of movers and shakers in New Jersey’s health care industry, NJBIZ editors targeted the medical, insurance, pharmaceutical, biotech and policy fields and spoke to insiders about who will influence and shape future health care policy. Dr. DiPaola, a clinician and researcher at CINJ since 1994, was selected to lead the center in 2008 following a nationwide search. In the article that accompanies its list, NJBIZ touts DiPaola’s leadership of New Jersey’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. CINJ is one of only 40 such centers in the United States and the only one in the state, where doctors not only focus on cancer prevention and education, but also have the ability to bring the latest treatment options and discoveries directly to patients, both at CINJ in New Brunswick and at the Institute’s 16 Network hospitals across the state.
DiPaola is a tenured professor of medicine at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and has international expertise as a prostate cancer physician and researcher. He is chairman of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Genitourinary committee, which is supported by the NCI and responsible for the development of large national clinical trials that are available to patients throughout the United States. He also is a member of multiple NCI committees including the investigational drug steering committee, the genitourinary steering committee, and an NCI grant review study section. He has garnered multiple Federal grants and awards, including a recent award that resulted in CINJ having the unique role of being part of a 13 member nationwide cancer consortium, which now brings new options in clinical trials to patients with prostate cancer in the state of New Jersey.
The Long Valley resident earned his medical degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine, followed by a medical residency at Duke University Medical Center. He completed an oncology and hematology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and has written more than 200 articles, abstracts and book chapters on cancer and his research.
