Mission

The primary mission of the BISR is to provide investigators with state-of-the-art tools and services that enable the creation and analysis of multi-dimensional data sets; the performance of high-throughput genomic analysis; and the collection and quantitative assessment of high-resolution imaging studies that are facilitated by high-performance computing environments and advanced machine-learning technologies.

The BISR's mission has now expanded to include the deployment of newly developed informatics infrastructure and resources that streamline the sharing and availability of the rich clinical and translational information generated by cross-disciplinary collaborations with our partnering healthcare system, RWJBarnabas Health. One of the overarching objectives driving the BISR mission is to "Establish Rutgers and RWJBarnabas as international leaders in the fields of biomedical informatics."

Personnel

David J. Foran, PhD, serves as Chief Informatics Officer and Director of Biomedical Informatics and Computational Imaging at Rutgers Cancer Institute. Foran was appointed the inaugural Chief Research Informatics Officer of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences in October 2021.

In this new position, he plays a leadership role in our community of investigators and healthcare providers to establish key initiatives such as the enterprise-wide, multi-Clinical and Research Data Warehouse (CRDW) and the integrated cloud computing environment to support AI and Machine-Learning pipelines.

Foran leads the development of the CRDW and other Biomedical Informatics applications that allow clinical and translational projects to proceed and consults with members on complex service development.

Wenjin Chen, PhD, serves as a Co-Manager of BISR and supports biomedical imaging analysis and infrastructure service development, including i) the BRHS biospecimen inventory dashboard and ii) the load (ETL) interfaces that facilitate the automated integration of data originating from the EMR, and image and genomic repositories integration into the Clinical and Research Data Warehouse.

Ying Chen, PhD, serves as Co-Manager of BISR. Ying Chen has deep experience in biomarker discovery, gene sequencing analysis, and meta-analysis of high-dimensional –omic datasets and performs customized software development for genomics research projects.

Youyi Peng, PhD, serves as a senior Biomedical Informatics Specialist providing lead expertise in molecular dynamics and computational modeling. She uses small molecule/peptide databases for in silico screening studies of key enzymes and receptors to identify lead targets for the design and development of novel therapeutics.

Kevin Meehan, Associate Director of Information Technology, provides leadership to the Rutgers Cancer Institute contributions to the Clinical & Research Data Warehouse and development of Dashboards and other data extraction services.

Marc Gregory, Director, Digital and Data Solutions & Support, provides leadership for all digital and data solution development and support for the BISR and the Institute.
