About Me

Dr. Kathie-Ann Joseph is a breast surgical oncologist committed to providing empathetic, patient-centered care grounded in trust and compassion, especially during the most vulnerable moments of a breast cancer diagnosis. A lifelong New Yorker who grew up in Brooklyn, she brings a deep connection to the communities she serves, which informs her dedication to supporting patients throughout their healthcare journeys.

She specializes in treating women with breast cancer and other breast conditions, and her clinical and research interests focus on improving access to care, especially for women presenting with advanced-stage disease. She has extensive experience developing comprehensive breast services, having led the breast service at Bellevue Hospital for 11 years. As Co-Director of the Beatrice W. Welters Breast Health Outreach and Navigation Program, she has helped more than 26,000 women across New York City access breast cancer screening, navigation, and support services.

As a clinician-scientist and Professor of Surgery, her research focuses on reducing breast cancer disparities among low–socioeconomic-status populations and women at increased risk of breast cancer. Her work emphasizes quality-of-care measures, evidence-based interventions, and patient navigation strategies to address patient, provider, and system-level barriers to timely screening, diagnosis, and treatment. She is actively engaged in national surgical organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the American Surgical Association, and the Society of Surgical Oncology, and she serves on the editorial boards of Annals of Surgical Oncology and the American Journal of Surgery. Her contributions have been recognized with honors, including the Susan G. Komen Gay Clark Stoddard Memorial Award and the American Cancer Society Eastern Division Leader in Cancer Care Award.

In addition to her research program, she has served in leadership roles at the hospital and system-wide. In these roles, she advances institutional initiatives to promote equitable cancer care and inclusive research environments. She has served and continue to serve as Co–Principal Investigator on NIH- and extramurally funded studies and has extensive experience in mentorship, study design, and building sustainable community partnerships.

Her path to medicine was shaped by a strong family history of cancer, motivating her medical training at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, followed by general surgery residency at NYU Langone and fellowship training in breast surgical oncology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Today, she is proud to collaborate with her colleagues at Rutgers Cancer Institute to deliver comprehensive, coordinated, and compassionate care for every patient.
